August 29, 2009 marked the first annual H.E.R. Day
Conference and launch of H.E.R. Day Corporation. 65 women
arrived with expectancy and gave their undivided attention to Pastor
Mary Searight as she opened the conference with a comical introduction
of Founder and President Alexis Nelson saying, “She is a tall glass of water…
Smart Water that is.”
During the morning session Alexis
told the history behind the vision and birth of H.E.R. Day, followed by short
stories of her experiences of dealing with the loss of her mother a little over
1 year ago. “I interviewed women for one year about what they experienced
when they lost their mothers and I used the similarities as the foundation to
put this conference together.”
Dr. Maria Flores, of Edison, NJ, came and spoke to the ladies
about Women’s Health. She proceeded to teach about eating habits, organic
foods, hereditary concerns, and the benefits of living a healthy
lifestyle. Many great questions were asked during the Q/A - it seemed
that almost every hand went up. Dr. Flores encouraged us to pay closer
attention to our health and she shared valuable information with us that we all
needed to know “Cancer is not the number 1 killer in women coronary heart
disease is”.
Antonia Winstead,
who spoke on mental health, lead an exercise that helped the women that
attended heal in the area of unforgiveness or things they were holding against
their mothers. Antonia’s willingness to be transparent and share her
experiences encouraged the women to heal when she said, “Anything that you feel
guilt about that transpired between you and your mother that you can’t take
back… let it go.”
After lunch during the afternoon
breakout sessions Alexis Nelson spoke about Mothers’ Day and
how difficult it can be for the daughter who has lost her mother. Alexis
shared with her H.E.R. Day sisters the true meaning of Mother’s Day, everyone
found the information enlightening. She reminded the attendees, “You
determine how your Mother’s Day goes, you determine how you will spend Mothers
Day”.
Marilyn McHugh
shared her heart when she taught the H.E.R. Day attendees about Legacy.
Marilyn reminded them that they too have their own special stories that they can
hold on to. Marilyn did a great job of teaching the women that,
“Her Legacy lives inside of you and it will always be there.”
Ardith Cook gave
tips on what to do when you’re a friend of a woman that has lost her
mother. Ardith mentioned that she has been a friend for many women who
have lost their mothers. One of the most memorial tips that Ardith shared
was, “Pay attention to her, monitor her, sometimes you just have to sit quiet
with her.”
Each woman that attended the
conference learned so much from every phenomenal guest speaker, the educational
health materials in the gift bags, and each other. Every friend of a
woman who lost their mother, left with an awareness of what to do, what to say,
when to react; and how to be a support to her friend that lost her
mother. Angela Carter, who attended the conference, said “I’m leaving
today with a deeper appreciation for my mother who is still here.”
Thank
you to all who attended, we sincerely hope that you
will join us at our next conference.
